Great! all of us agree with something! What are your own thoughts on the M? BMW whored out M just like Mercedes did with AMG. Whatever occured to producing autos fast that were worth a darn? What person would like a 4500lb pig with 500 hp?

I'm not prepared to argue whether the load on the alternator is the same as the load of the mechanical fan.

But a $2 switch from Radio-shack lets you turn it off or better yet a $50 thermostat and it cycles by itself. I have both and I turn the whole system off during track sessions and auto-cross runs.

The electric fan moves more CFM than the mech fan. Mine usually only stays on for 30 seconds at a time. In fact it rarely runs at all, but when it is running it is indispensable.

... because one of the problems with it is that it can become weak and brittle and break, or the bearing it is on will start to become weak. it can come in contact with the radiator and within a minute your engine has overheated and chances are you need a new headgasket. it really is a ticking timebomb.

Why not just keep the stock fan? I doubt theres a distunguishable gain with it gone. Plus it doesnt really take power from your engine until the clutch locks, at normal temps the blade kinda free wheels. Why mess with OEM design?

I have had problems.

Get the electric fan and you will be ok. Skip it and you are flirting with trouble. (I live in a warm climate) On a hot day, with the ac on and if I am in traffic for more than about 20 minutes (i never timed it) the car will start getting hot. On a normal day if in traffic for more than 3 minutes I can feel the car get heatsoked (stock gauge does not indicate, but aftermarket doesn't lie). I had a cold thermostat, fan switch and have tried water wetter, none of these replace that primary fan.
